5 Tips For Designing The Perfect Laundry Room
Creating a functional and practical laundry space will help to make laundry day less of a chore. These 5 tips from our design team include some laundry design ideas will have you well on your way to a tidy and organised laundry.
1. Create a home for everything
A laundry room tends to be a small space. But that doesn’t mean it can’t have lots of clever laundry storage ideas such as a drop down or fold out ironing board. Add a pull out laundry hamper into a cabinet next to your washing machine to keep dirty laundry hidden away and, if you have space, add a tall narrow cupboard to your vacuum cleaner and brooms. Include some overhead cabinets that run right to the ceiling to store detergents, and general cleaning products.
2. Include some bench space
Position your front loading washing machine and dryer under a benchtop to give you lots of space to fold and sort clothes and carry out those messy cleaning chores. Choose a benchtop material that is resistant to water and is hard wearing. Position a hanging rail above an area of bench to hang freshly ironed clothes or leave shirts to dry wrinkle free
3. Hide it away
If your laundry is in a nook as opposed to a separate room, then consider hiding it away behind some bi-folding doors that match other cabinetry in your home, such as your kitchen or bathroom vanity. They will keep the space looking neat and tidy but easily accessible.
4. Add a sink
Handwashing delicates, soaking clothes, filling large buckets with water, and washing BBQ grills are all chores that are made so much easier with the inclusion of a large tub in your laundry room design. Choose an extra deep tub made from a good quality heavy gauge stainless steel that will be hard wearing and easy to clean
5. Maximise its potential
In a two story home it may be possible to incorporate a laundry chute into your laundry design so that you can easily send dirty clothes directly down to the laundry from an upstairs bathroom. Also, if you are lucky enough to have a large laundry room located close to the entrance of your home, consider creating a ‘mud room’ area for children to take off their shoes and hang jackets and hats with some deep drawers to store school bags, sports gear, and pool towels.
